中国制造业以高性价比在全球市场中获得了很强的竞争力，但目前面临着转型升级的挑战。
2012年中国超越美国成为全球最大的制造业大国。中国制造业出口占世界制造业出口的比重从1990年的0.8%上升到2009年的13.5%。
驱动中国制造业发展的驱动因素有大量的劳动力人口，研发投入不断增加，海外并购和国内市场容量。从1965年开始中国的劳动力人口占总人口比重不断上升，从1965年的55%到2010年的超过70%。中国大学扩招后，每年毕业的大学毕业生达到700万左右，其中技术和工程类大学毕业生超200万。从2005年开始中国的研发投入占GDP的比重不断上升，从2005年的1%左右提升到2012年的近2%。中国城市人口人均收入从2001年的6859.6元上升到2011年的21809.8元。
在过去中国制造业的发展动力是要素投入和投资驱动，具体来说是经济规模、资源投入、低成本、投资和全球化。
